I’ve chosen to lead off our series of posts on How to Play Your Best Golf because its important to have a basic philosophy in mind when you’re playing golf.
First of all, golf is a game of overcoming challenges and barriers that are built in on the course or playing field. Your goal is to maneuver around those obstacles, get in position to score, and get the ball on the green or in the cup on each hole.
Sounds rudimentary but believe it or not many golfers are doing something different in purpose and lose scope of what their objective is. Your objective on every hole is to feel good about what you’re doing and score.
Golf is a game to have some wins and successes with your skills regardless of what level you excel at. It is not a game of making you feel bad or bent out of shape that you failed at some part of it or something you can’t do. well. It’s a game of having some enjoyment with the shots you hit and some fun being out amongst some great scenery with friends or new friends to be made. The solidarity of nine or eighteen holes by oneself is therapeutic and relaxing in itself to say the least.
Golf is a lot like life. It’s how you play the game that counts!
If there is a basic philosophy to golf, it is this constant reminder that you’re playing a game that has a series of built in barriers and obstacles and it is a game to overcome those challenges and feel good about your ability and skills.
There’s a lot you can learn about yourself and others on how they play the game itself and how we each conduct ourselves on the course. When things get too serious than we have become the effect of our own frustration and we start to get in the way of our own enjoyment and goals.
So make sure you keep this in mind and maintain a spirit of play and play golf as a game and have some enjoyment for you in your ability to play this great game we call golf.

Did you know that the pros on tour spend a lot of time in their practice on their set-ups and their routine. More so than you think.
The reason for this is that they know that to hit consistent good golf shots a good routine steadies them for the shot at hand and when they combine a well crafted physical and mental routine, they could achieve a pace and rhythm to their shot. They could approach each shot as if it were a cycle of action that had key parts and actions they did.
This routine needs to be mastered early on in your golf training along with your basic fundamentals and focusing on the target game. There’s a physical part to the physical routine and there is the mental side to it as well. We’re talking more here with the physical side for now.
The advance golfer comes to realize this and makes it a practice to hit shots in practice with a ‘full dress routine’ so that when he is playing on the course for score he knows what his routine is and it works for him. Jack Nicklaus was a big believer in the importance of practicing your routine at the range and bringing it to the course as your own. This is key advice to follow.
Pros also come to realize that if they can get their routine to flow into the shot better than the shot will be better in its out come. They learn to become more aware of the sequence or step they are in with their routine and in doing so they move thru to the point of hitting the ball and completing the golf shot as a cycle of action. They learn to focus on the golf shot this way and taking it from start all the way thru to completion in hitting of the ball.
The golf swing is more than just its mechanics and basics but is an intention to make or execute a swing thought and have it be the shot one “sees” or visualizes in their minds eye that goes to the target, green or hole.
The pros key more on the mental focus and intention part of the golf shot routine than the average golfer because they know the essence of the golf shot is the intention to make or execute the swing and get the shot off while its still “fresh” and in the create mode. The more they can swing and get in motion with the club, trust their mechanics, feel the shot, the more they are able to reach a higher level of shot-making and execution in their golf swings.
If you would time a professional golfer’s routine you would come to realize that it is very precise and usually within a second or two and the shot is on its way to the target. You’ll find this pretty much to be the same with each shot from the drive, the fairway shot, the sand shot to chipping and putting.
So if your routine varies too much and is inconsistent, you’re most likely trying to hit your shots with too much attention on the mechanics of the golf swing, instead of keying more on the pace of the shot and getting into a rhythm with each shot.
I recommend you do this: Pay more attention to moving smoothly thru your pre-shot routine both the physical aspect and the mental and try to establish a tempo and pace with it on each shot that is consistent time-wise on all your shots. Think of each shot as a cycle of action. In doing so you will find yourself concentrating on each shot in a new unit of time, hitting crisper and better shots to the target, and scoring better as a result.
Work on your routine as a drill at the practice range and when you go to play you will more there it will be more ‘automatic’ and working for you.

Hi Guys:
The key to getting out of the sand every time is knowing an important secret to hitting this shot. [You can see me demonstrating this shot on the video].
I’m going to reveal to you here what I learned from certain touring pros on how to hit this shot and you’ll have the information to make it your own.
Over the years at our golf schools we looked for a drill that would cut right thru and deliver a high skill level that students could use and learn quickly. So I’m giving it to you here.
But before we do this let’s touch on a couple key basics for this shot:
1. Open your stance left of the target with your shoulders and hips and foot line;
2. Open your club some and aim the club face to the hole;
3. Hinge the club up steeply as you go back up to the top;
4. Keep your weight more on your left side going back;
5. Drop the club down and thru about two inches behind the ball and explode the ball out towards the target;
6. Stay with the shot at impact and finish thru the shot with good balance in-tack;
I call it the “Walk the Line“ Drill named after the famous singer Johnny Cash and taken from his movie from a few years. I love this drill because it works so effectively. Here’s what you do to learn the sand shot.
Part 1: Draw a line in the sand two inches behind the ball about three feet long. You practice hitting the spot two inches behind the ball and “you walk the line” hitting the next one and the next one training your club and mind to enter at the precise point behind the sand every time.
Part 2: Now in part two of the drill you go ahead and practice hitting the sand shot concentrating on hitting two inches back of the ball. [You can see me here in the video part of the drill doing the sand shot drill].

When it comes to your golf score for the day it always comes down to how well you converted strokes from 120 yards and in.
Can you get it close with the wedge, can you get up and down? Can you make key putts when you need to for par or birdie? That’s what converts strokes and makes for a better score. I estimate the swing herein the scoring department is from three to right strokes or more depending on several factors.
I doesn’t matter if you can hit it a ‘country-mile’, if you can’t get it close with the wedge or a nine iron and putt well, you won’t score well. Only a better scoring game can fix that.
I recommend you change your view of the scoring game and move away from the all mighty power game right now! Adopt the view point that Scoring Game is the KEY area. Shift to the attitude of regardless where you hit it off the tee or your second shot, that I am now in my special zone and click in the sensation that you can score from any place on the golf course.
This is ideally the place you need to be that your real challenge begins here with your game. Yes its great to drive it in the fairway but it doesn’t matter if you blast it 300 yards or more, if you can’t get it close on the green or get it up and down and make the key putt, it’s all a bit futile when it comes to having the scores you desire.
Like I said, there’s a swing of about 3 to 8 strokes or more in the short game or scoring game area. The old adage “you drive for show and putt for dough” rings true today as much as it did 50 to 75 years ago. Golf is a scoring game and three key scoring game club are definitely the driver or three wood, the wedge, and the putter. But like I said, you should be able to recover back to the fairwayand get to the 120 to 110 yard zone and from here go to work and get the job done.
There’s not a better feeling morale wise to scoring in golf and being able to score at will when needed. Not a better felling than that my friends.
My Golf Prescription for You –
So here’s what I recommend you do to improve your short game and gain more mastery over your scoring game.
1). Make the mental shift to this view point and attitude
2). Change your practice routine to 70 % scoring game and practice all scoring game shots in each practice session: 20 mins or so of wedge shots full and three-quarters (pitching, gap and sand,) flop and sand shots for ten minutes, Get some feel into these shots and your hands and work rhythm into these shots for feel.
3). Practice putt for twenty minutes or so starting with long putts first to warm up your stroke, then work on the 10 to 20 feet putt range, and then shorts ones from 3-5 feet.
4). Do this 2-3 times a week just for one hour each time. Repeat this each where you can.
5). Play a par three course early in the morning or late in the day playing two balls around if you can.
You need to be developing better skills with the wedges, hitting in from 100 yards and in. Getting the ball fifteen feet or closer at will. and your good shots seven feet or closer to the pin.
If you follow this PLAN it will work believe me. As matter of fact it will greatly improve your short game resulting in the ability to score better at will. Try it. Let me know how it works for you.

In this video, I am demonstrating the pitch and run using a 7 and a 9 iron here.
This short game scoring shot is an essential part of your scoring game arsenal.
The difference is where the ball lands and rolls out to the hole and for the 7 iron
which is approx. 23 degrees and for the 9 iron about 30 degrees into the green.
What’s great about this shot is that it has few parts and can be executed with
minimal effort and technique.
In this shot, the keys are to pitch out to a spot to land the ball into the green
and then let it run to the hole. I learned this system from the great Paul Runyan,
who was a definite master at the short game area. It truly works, is very effective
and easy to learn and master.
It just takes a little practice on a consistent basis to maintain.
The objective here is to make this an easy shot to hit much like a putt and in
many ways is an extension of putting. The idea to grasp is to “putt with loft”
on these shots and allow the ball to run out to the hole depending on the club
you are using.
On these shots hit the shot off the middle or back foot with your hands forward,
weight on the left side and finish thru the shot low. The right hand turns the club
over naturally and helps the ball run out in a controlled way. Tip the club up more
on the toe and your good to go. Advanced players and pros use the reverse overlap
grip for this shot 80% of the time.

It never ceases to amaze me in speaking with students and client golfers talking about the golf swing itself that its really all about BASICS being IN and not OUT.
You see when you watch an advance golfer or pro on tour it looks easy and it in many respects it is because they KNOW and can apply the essentials or key fundamentals to their golf swing. They have a certainty most of the time on their swing and what makes it work. It’s like knowing the formula or what turns the key in the door that makes it work. There’s a simplicity that goes with the formula.
There’s a lot to be said about this. This is not some serious overdone statement here because you see, it has always been a strict adherence to essential basics or fundamentals in the golf swing that work and make the real difference for you as the golfer. This is the only true difference and your key to getting to the next level in golf improvement.
Over the last several years, I have observed and done numerous interviews with students on just what knowledge of the key fundamentals each of my students had of the golf swing motion. I was surprised to find that many of them still have basic mis-understandings of key basics or fundamentals. Even with some of my advanced players and students.
An example of this comes that comes to mind was with an LPGA player several years ago and when I asked her to put more “flex” into her stance. There appeared to be and was a mis-communication between us because she did not really know what “flex” meant. She was not putting ‘flex’ into her knees on the inside of her thighs or legs. We got this cleared up and it made a big difference not only in our level of communication but in basics being fully in and not out.
I have found the reason most golfers who can’t break 100 or 90 or better has all to do with actual basics being out and not because of a lack of ability to create a good swing motion. ITS ALL ABOUT BASICS. Can you perform them or not.
It is my job as an instructor to educate you on an understanding your basics and essentials otherwise you as a golf student won’t really get any better. You’ll get to a level and then because of this lack of essentials being in, will “hit the wall” on this as a real barrier and not progress past that point really. I have seen this phenomenon many times with players super frustrated due to their lack of progress. Some even quit.
Students then think its more to do with their golf equipment, which at times can be one of the reasons or his lack of practice or playing time. When in the majority of the cases, its his not getting the right training and learning the key fundamentals to the golf swing mechanics and learning how to play out on the course, which is the real reason or why for his lack of progress and performance on the course.
Unfortunately many golfers skimp on educating themselves on key basics and to be to the point are too glib or think they know their fundamentals when they really don’t, to fully grasp their golf training key essentials.
I have found a high percentage of golfers as high as 90% or so don’t really know, understand the theory nor can demonstrate the Three Key components to the golf swing, which are Balance, Pivot and Drive into the ball at impact. I am serious about this.
This leads us to this observation and LAW: A golfer is only as good as he understands his basics and essential fundamentals that are KEY to the golf swing motion and its mechanics. You have to know your basics cold and can apply them with your golf swing to be consistent. So as you can see one of the key themes to this Swing Mentor.com blog is getting your basics and fundamentals really learned.

Balance is most likely the most overlooked and misunderstood essential in the golf swing today. And most golfers do not have a solid grasp of this fundamental mainly because it is not taught correctly and in some cases totally missing in action or omitted in the teaching of golf basics.
Balance has to do with the timing of the shift of weight of the body in relation to swinging the club head and this requires the meshing of both these factors as ONE. This requires training one’s perception and awareness of where the golf club is being swung around his body or rotated around the trunk of the body back away from the ball and down and through towards the target.
It’s an issue of timing these two essential factors: holding a position and knowing where ones’ center of gravity is in relation to the swinging clubhead. This is a skill that is developed and has a predictable pattern to it the golfer learns to master or use in the golf swing. That’s what timing is all about in the golf swing motion.
When I say holding a position I mean that the feet act as the platform for the body and arms to rotate around and to swing in motion back and thru to hit the ball to the target.
In a good golf swing, the golfer maintains his balance all the way thru to swing’s end. That’s something you should strive for in your swing and work on as an exercise. Swinging the club at a 80% pace is sufficient enough to harness power in your swing and keeps you in control of the motion as you transition from back swing to forward swing thru the ball.
All good golf shots are the result of swinging in balance and control. Remember that!
